Outlook: “Can’t move the items. Special folders, including the Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Journal folders cannot be moved.”

I found one of my user’s "Junk E-Mail" folder was moved under Journal folder. So he wasn’t seeing Junk E-Mail folder in normal Outlook 2003 view. Well, if he clicks on Folder view and able to find the moved folder. When I tried to move the folder using Outlook 2003, I get this error message: "Can’t move the items. Special folders, including the Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Tasks, and Journal folders cannot be moved."

How to move the Junk E-mail (or Contacts, Inbox or Calendar) folder back to the original location?

The answer is very simple. You need Outlook 2000. Fire up Outlook 2000, Open the user’s mailbox and move the folder to original location.

Outlook 2000 don’t care about the special folders like Outlook XP and up. Hope you have a copy of Outlook 2000 software somewhere on the pile.

  1. You can also use the /ResetFolders switch when starting Outlook. This will reset the Outlook folders to their default state. Once the folders are reset, you can then go back and use the MFCMAPI tool and "move" any messages. This works exceptionally well for Calendar items as it does not try to recreate each calendar item individually. Once the moves are complete, you can then go back and delete the old folder.Ed McKinziehttp://edmckinzie.spaces.live.com
